Inpt OB vs Maternal/Low Risk Newborn RNC

Hello fellow OB nurses,

I have been pondering my RNC...take it or not take it? It will be for self gratification. No increase in pay, no hall of fame...my facility won't pay it. Nothing, nada....

So before I jump right in to it does anybody have any suggestions as to which to take? The Inpt OB or Maternal/Low risk newborn?

what to do...what to do...

thanks!:nurse:

What do you primarily do at work, L&D, or mother/baby? Or are you crosstrained for all (in which case you'd likely be as well off with one as the other)? Where I am, the L&D nurses typically have the Inpt OB cert, whereas the mother/baby folks have theirs in Maternal-Newborn. I don't know anyone who has their Low-risk Neonatal RNC, but if newborns and nursery are where you are most comfortable, it might be worth considering.

Good point! I hadn't thought about it that way. I am crossed trained to do it all. I would only do L/D if I had the option! lol

Thanks for the reply

I have researched several books for my RNC for maternal nursing, any advice on which is best? The book sold through the certifiication site has many negative reviews.

Hi lorijorn,

I have several books, and they were all helpful in one way or another. But what I think really really helped was a two day prep class for Inpt OB. I can't imagine how I would've passed without the class. I traveled from Illinois to California to take the class and sit for the test at the same time, it was well worth my money. I will provide the link! Good Luck to you.
