Indiana Scholarship for Nurses

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Does anyone know why the state of Indiana does not allow people to get a nurse scholarship from the state funds if they already have a BS in another area? I even wrote an appeal letter - but they only allow people who do not have degrees. I know someone who has as many credit hours as me - got it because they did not accept a BS. I got the BS and can't get it. They use the FAFSA and your social security number and know how much education you have. Seems to me that with the 2 year work requirement they could allow someone to get this scholarship who has a degree in another area. I already can't get Pell or Federal or State loans. I keep researching scholarships but they will say current high school senior or something like that. I don't own a home so can't borrow on that. Too old for military. I am applying for a lot of charge cards so I can borrow on them if necessary to pay for school - if I am lucky enough to get chosen this time around. I actually think the schools prefer admitting students who have all the scholarships and grants - since they definitly have the money. Then many of them get the money and drop out without finishing.

sorry you are having trouble but it happens all the time. i went throught alot to get a loan for lpn. i went to ivy tech in sellersburg and was a waiting list and you had to have the highest grades :angryfire but :angryfire (fact) if you were on welfare (no income) and she didn't even score high to be put on waiting list, you were in the program! this is true i know the girl, and she dropped out after 2 months, pregnant with #3 baby. ivy tech still gets their money from our goverment (our tax money) even though she didn't finish or is in school now. i know this didn't help you with your problem but you up against the money game of goverment.

i do hope you find help, barb

yes the welfare and government money people are accepted with poor grades because the government has to get them into school and they often do drop out! then i can't get in because i don't receive welfare. you have to know the ropes of how the system works to get into ivy tech. this has been going on for many years. i just don't understand why indiana does things this way. seems like poor behavior gets you into school faster than good behavior. then the school still gets the money when they drop out!

hi, i am a little disappointed in your message, there regarding welfare, and "our tax dollars". i am a single mother, who is on welfare because i have a daughter by one of "our soldiers" who will not pay child support and i have no other choice to get welfare. its for my daughter. i also work too. so i guess i am just getting my own tax money back. but seriously, don't put down people on welfare...get on automatically, because at least they are doing something to get them selfs off of the assistants. i will pray for you. don't put others down because they dont have the abilities that you have. we are people too. god bless you....

Yes, but you can't deny that there are tons of people who abuse the system. There are people who genuinely need it, but there are just as many people who are lazy and don't want to work. I know several of them personally.

I am not aware of any preference to those on Welfare in the nursing program at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. All applicants must pass the TEAS exam with minimum scores in all areas and all applicants are accepted on a "points" basis.

Your best option might be to go to the various hospitals/health care facilities in your area and see if they will help pay for school in return for a commitment to work there after graduation. I know of several people who attended Ball State's BSN program (and who already had four year degrees) who had all of their tuition and books paid by Ball Memorial Hospital. I suspect that many other facilities have similiar programs (note these people were NOT employees there when they got the grants).
