What are the advantages/disadvantages to working as an independent contractor?

Advantages

You are your own boss

Control over the amount of income you make

Practice independent of medical direction

Ability to make anesthesia decisions and purchase anesthesia equipment that you want

Disadvantages

Learning the business of anesthesia: marketing, finances, contract negotiations

Setting up a mechanism for reimbursement

Being your own boss and taking responsibility for everything

Not having paid vacations, sick leave and benefits (this is not really a disadvantage, because you can set all of thsese up trough your own business)

There are many more. I have been an indpendent practitioner for over 20 years and love it. Some can not handle the need to put time and attention to the business aspect of practice.

Are there books or anything I can read up on the subject? How useful would an MBA be if you want to start your own business? And how can you from your own CRNA group?
