I'm a nerd and feel the need to study

Specialties NP

I'm applying to FNP programs, for hopeful acceptance in January 2010. In the meantime, I work in more of a Nurse Manager type role with a lot of administration stuff, not a lot of hands-on stuff. I've only been in my role a short time and really miss hands-on patient care. I advanced into this role, and administration isn't my calling. I've wanted to be an FNP since becoming a nurse over 12 years ago. :heartbeat

My husband is in classes in the evening, and our kids are in bed so early. I'd love to do some reading/studying in advance. Mostly to keep my excitement level up, but also because I love to read and study.

What can you recommend to a future FNP as some good pre-grad school reading material?

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Are you interested in textbooks, journals, or something else? I just graduated from an FNP program and find that my biggest challenge is pharmacology. I loved my pharm textbook, and would recommend it if you wanted to learn more about drugs. It's "Pharmacology for the Primary Care Provider" by Edmunds and Mayhew. They're both NPs and I think the book is great.

Best of luck to you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your acceptance!

Thanks for the pharm book suggestion. I would be interested in jounals as well.

Specializes in Critical Care, Orthopedics, Hospitalists.

Patho and Pharm were probably the two toughest courses, simply because of the EXTREME amount of information you are given to "learn" over such a short period of time. I'd start there, as no matter where you get accepted, you will be taking these classes pretty much first.

My patho book, while overwhelming, I thought was very good - http://www.amazon.com/Pathophysiology-Biologic-Disease-Adults-Children/dp/0323035078/ref=pd_sim_b_1/189-2609259-9790523

It comes with a workbook I found especially helpful.

Good luck! Let us know when you get in! :D
