i am interested in hearing from nurses who have worked critical care assignments in hawaii. what hospitals are good assignments, housing, transportation ect.

I've been traveling for almost two yrs.now with a small child,I've been promised an assign.on one the Hawaii islands several times and it always falls through either my start date is too late or because I travel with a small child by myself the housing isn't right,"What is the deal?These comp.promise assing.they don't really have to get you to sign up and then try and talk you into taking somewhere else in hopes of next time getting where you want to go. I have no home base and with a small child I cant be lied to so I have to take the assign.so at least I'll have a place to live and work. Watch out for these promises, most companies when I finally tell them "don't tell me stuff thats not true cuz I travel by myself with a small child they then tell me no we don't have an assign. so you just have to be straight with them. I'm still looking to go to Hawaii. pj

Currently, I am on assignment at Kapiolani Women and Childrens' Hospital in the Peds ICU www.kapiolani.org There are many travel nurses here, and some have small children! Many have been here a year as a travel nurse, some are single, many are married and husband is with military. The housing is nice here. I am at A SUMMER PALACE centrally located near Waikiki Beach! I am almost on the top floor at the 19th floor with oceanview and a huge patio (lanai). Self-scheduling, 12 hour shifts, ACLS/PALS free,

Excellent health care and hospital payroll, travel company provides housing. Bus discounts from hospital! www.thebus.org

You can travel the entire island for one dollar! (With transfers) There are also assignments not only in Oahu, but currently my travel company has postings for Kauai ER and Maui.www.baywatchmaui.com

We went to Hawaii this year for vacation. I had lived there as a child at Barbers Point, a navy base that has since closed. My sister was born there. My oldest child wants very much to go to the Univeristy of Hawaii and has begged me to move there. Love to, but the cost of moving and the housing is prohibitive. However I did look at nursing job opening,(I always do wherever I am, just curious)and to me it looked like there were many job openings. If you get there you will never want to leave! I didn't as a child and I didn't want to go home from vacation. The pace of life is slower I think, and people are frieldly. If you get the chance to go, then go. You'll love swimming in the ocean, you'll love the way it smells after it rains. You'll have the oportunity to try and enjoy foods you may never have seen before. You'll experience a rich culture of many different people. av8rnurse, how do you like the international marketplace? The street performances at night on Waikiki? leannenw the North Shore is awesome, and come November the Surf comes up and international surfing competitions are held, if you get a chnace to see it besides on TV, it is really something. Because of volcano ash you'll see rainbows nearly everyday in the mountains that ring Honolulu. Sometimes it will rain really hard and you will see tourists running for the inside and people who live there will just keep strolling. Quick, hard rain comes and goes in sometimes a matter of minutes, and afterwards the air smells fresh and sometimes the smell of various flowers will be left in the air. It's wonderful. Any place has downsides, and Hawaii has some, but if I could go and stay I would do it in a heartbeat. pjh, keep looking! You will give your child an experience that he/she will never forget. For myself, as a child, it gave me the ability to enjoy other cultures and to appreciate the wonderful diversity this country can have. The only downside to that, if you can call it a downside, is that I have little, if any patience with people that are prejudiced. By the way, McDonald's serves pineapple with their meals, no one thinks a thing about walking into a store in a bathing suit, or going into one barefoot when you are near a beach. I went to the school on base, and we always took our shoes off at the door. We put them on for recess. I smile just remembering all the things that brought me joy as a child, and returning as an adult was like going home. To anybody I say reach for it and go,go,go. Even if you cannot end up staying it is an experience you will remember for the est of your days, and I don't think you will ever regret it.

I'm currently working in a small rural hosptial on the island of Hawaii (think volcanoes, Kona), its known locally as the Big Island. The hospital only has 4 combined ICCU rooms, 2 RNs on shift. If your looking for quiet shifts (usually), sunny beaches then consider Hawaii. BUT also keep in mind the high cost of living. Gas prices are around $2.00 and up. You might look into MedStaffers. They supply Tripler Army Medical Center with travelers. I've been told their rates/housing reimbursements aren't bad.

Do you have private housing paid for??? Just curious. Do they float you to the NICU and does NICU travelers float up to the PICU? I am a NICU nurse looking to come to that hospital. Have you heard anything about the NICU there? Any reccommendations? I want a company that provides private housing for me without any extra fee. Thanks so much !! Ashley

It seems like most of the travel talk about Hawaii involves NICU's and PICU's. Does this mean that opportunities for MICU, SICU work (travel or otherwise) is not available on Oahu (where we want to live). Also how many travel companies will consider husband and wife teams with a kid?

I see its been awhile since you worked on Kona, but I am getting ready to do my first assignment there and I was just curious if yoiu had to rent a car, did your lease or buy one. Because I hear there isn't any public transportation. Please let me know ASAP I am leaving June 11th and I am a nervous wreck about the car situation. Thanks Sandy
