I need NYU, UPENN, Columbia, UCSF MSN info.

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi,

I am looking to apply to NYU, UPENN, UCSF and Columbia to their MSN program. I already have my BSN. I was curious if you guys know how competitive their programs are (applicants vs accepted), and how much GPA plays a factor into admissions. I have a 3.0 overall GPA with a 3.4 GPA in nursing core. I know that reference letters, personal statement, and GRE are weighed in as well. I just want to know if GPA is real competitive in traditional MSN entry, or based on an individual basis.

Thanks!

There wasn't any replies here so ill just add a bit. Not sure if it will be helpful at all, but...

What I have found through digging through about GPAs and such is exactly what you said they also look at test scores (but, i think a few of those schools you dont even need GPA), experience, and references.

Some of the schools also just look at your last two years- so is that what your nursing core GPA is?

I know that UCSF also really prefers if you have a second language (spanish) in order to get into their programs- more so than most programs.

I know that it's less competitive than the MEPN programs but, I also think they expect more from you. and you are competing against some very well qualified nurses that have worked in manager positions and so on...

I don't know if you find this interesting. It doesn't pertain to exactly your schools- but, University of Washington which is up there with those schools. They have a statistics of how many students they accept. Admission Statistics

And at UPenn if you have over a 3.2 you can get a GRE waiver. So that being said I think if you have a GPA of 3.2 plus you are in the running without taking the GREs.

Not sure if that helps at all. Just thought I'd put in my two cents because no one else was.

And what speciality are you applying to? I think some are going to be more competitive than others...

The only one I can help you with is NYU. I got accepted to their Master's program for the fall. I had a 3.2 GPA with good references and a good personal statement. They didn't require the GRE. I can't tell you anything statistic wise but I've only been a nurse for about a year so they don't require tons of experience. I know this isn't much information but hopefully it's better than nothing!

What NP program did you get into?

APN: Adult Primary Care/Geriatrics

@LacieL24 Hi! I am thinking about applying to NYU's Adult/Geri Program... I would like to ask you about the personal statement. Is there a required # of pages to follow? What exactly do we have to write about (Why we want to apply for the APN program)? Also, when you applied.. how soon did you hear from them? Thanks! :)

Nice, congrats Lacie. I am sending my application tomorrow for the ACNP. Maybe we'll be going to school together in the fall!

One question, do you know how many slots there are for each np program? Also, how long did it take for them to get back to you?
