I may be jumping the gun here...

To all of my wonderful LPNs/LVNs out there:

I'll be starting my LPN program this month. What are the chances of landing an entry level LPN job that does NOT involve a LTC facility/Nursing home? I'm not opposed to working at a nursing home or long term care facility but it really isn't what I'm looking for. I'd like to work at a clinic, private physician's office or hospital (although I know they're phasing LPNs out of hospitals...at least in NJ).

I've been looking up LPN jobs for fun and all I can find are nursing homes ?

Hey ashton! I am an LPN and I have never worked in a SNF or LTC. I got my start in Urgent cares. I’ve worked in Urgent care for 5 years, moving on with my RN to the hospitals. Don’t give up hope, there are UC jobs out there for you.

The job postings for nursing homes LTC never go away because they are meat grinders taking in nurses and spitting them out a year or so later. Some Nurses are really meant for LTC but they aren't enough to fill the positions.

You have options but as a new grad your competing against all the nurses who are on the other end of that grinder. They have more experience and are more marketable. You should start networking NOW. walk around job fairs at local health systems, a lot do use LPNs in specialty clinics, and no floor procedure areas. Dialysis clinics will sometimes hire, depending on your state. You have to go and look for them, but they exist.

I teach LPNs and see where they go when they graduate.

Nationally more LPNs work in LTC than any other setting.

Other jobs that LPNs take are more dependent on your area. My new grads get jobs in hospital Med/Surg units (typical for our area not typical for most areas), home health, urgent cares (they do clinicals in urgent cares and easily get jobs there), schools (not super common to have openings but new grads can get them), psych, and doctor's offices. My area doesn't but I have seen other areas also hire LPNs as scrub techs.

I have no idea if you would be interested, but correctional facilities hire a lot of LPNs too. It's stressful and would be difficult as a new grad, but it's an option. Also, you tend to see really interesting cases and often get to perform procedures and treatments you wouldn't do as much in a clinic or LTC. I never drew blood on the job until I worked at a prison. I do it fairly regularly now. EKGs, responding to emergencies on a golf cart are a couple other things I had never done before coming to a prison. ?
