I had a family emergency last week, but still could not miss clinicals because at our school, you can only miss 2 days and then you are out of the program. My mind was on my sick child at clinicals. She was in the ER, and I had to leave her with my inlaws as I had to go to clinicals since I could noit miss anymore clinicals. Anyway, my clinical instructor has put me on probation, because after hanging up an IVPB, I forgot to attach primary line to patient. I had not started pump yet. My instructor wrote me up, after saying I forgot to attach line, I agree I messed up, but I am so close to graduating this May. I feel horrible. I admitted my fault to the instructor saying no matter what I have to be totally focused on the patiert, but it really hurts inside! I love taking care of my patients! Kathy:chuckle

Sorry to hear about your kid. Hope things work out ok.
As for the clinicals. Did you give this explanation to the instructor? And how good is the rest of your clinicals?
The lesson to learn?
Life gets in the way sometimes of doing your job.
Missing your clinicals may have set you back - but what cost trying to muddle through instead?
Nursing is a pressured job - and I'm not suggesting you can't hack pressure - but you can learn from it. Mistakes happen under pressure and nurses need to remember that. We all make them.
Anyone who says they don't is a dillberry.

Mr Ian made a great post. At this point, you need to forgive yourself and move on. Focus on doing a good job for the rest of the semester and not on the past mistake you cannot change.
We all make mistakes and we all need to live with them.
I hope all is well with your family now, too.
Take care,

Mr Ian made a great post.
Mr Ian is verty drunk
My child is doing well now. Thank you all for your advice. Thanks, I need to focus on my last two days of clinicals this Tuesday and Wednesday, and then I start preceptorship. I guess, I am just scared I will make an error again at clinicals. I do feel a lot of pressure with this situation, especially being down to my final days of clinical. My instructor knew I had a child in the ER that day. Anyway, I won't dwell on the past, but hope for the future. I did pass my final lab testout and my lecture grades are good. Thanks for your comments. Kathy
En vino veritas...
