I have an interview tomorrow...help

I have an interview for the surgical/oncology floor tomorrow at 1000. I'm nervous about going to the interview. I had an interview a few months back but did not get the job. One question I was faced with was, "What was one thing you did above and beyond your call of duty in the past?" Im a new graduate, so it was very difficult to answer the question. Please help me.

Congrats on the interview! It's normal to be nervous, but do your best to stay calm and confident - you got the interview for a reason.

Just because you're a new grad doesn't mean you haven't gone above and beyond for someone. In oncology, the little things we do for patients and families are important. Think about your clinicals, I'm sure you went the extra mile at least once. Did you comfort a scared patient, take time to listen, speak up on someone's behalf? The person interviewing you wants to know that you're willing to put the extra effort in and recognize that there's more to patient care than the technical skills.

Whenever you have the chance, give examples to support your answers. If they ask you a clinical question that you don't know the complete answer to, it's okay to tell them what you do know (assessing is always a good place to start!) and say that you'd look it up/ask for help.

Make sure you're familiar with the hospital and its philosophy/mission, the patient population, etc. Have questions for the interviewers.

Bring extra copies of your resume, references, and any other supporting material, and offer them up even if you aren't asked. Get a business card from each person who interviews you and send a thank you note the next day. Before you leave, ask when and how to follow up for a decision.

Good luck, oncology is tough, but it's a great place to work!

I agree. Make sure you review the scope of practice, code of ethics, and nurse practice act. I'm a new graduate as well and got those questions in an interview:uhoh3:

Thank you for your response to this post. I will take your in your advice. It's hard to think while you are put on the spot but I will surely take my time to think before I answer anything.
