i can't believe i ate that!

'i can't believe i did that!'

in every type of employment there are days that getting a break or a bit of time to grab a snack or some meals are total impossibilities. this is especially true of the job of a nurse. there are days and days, or at least one can expect days and days, of rushing around and the tasks and demands are endless and you wonder why you feel so terrible, then realize you have not eaten, and you are ravenous by then.

such was the case on our medical unit many days but one day in particular stands out as one of the most embarrassing of my life, but also proves that nurses will eat anything, anywhere when that strong hunger sets in.

from 6:45am to 1:00 p.m. on that fateful day, the unit was like a beehive, no time to stop, no time to have a bathroom break, no time certainly to consider food. but by 1pm it had settled down enough for a couple of us,

nurses and doctors, to realize we had to feed ourselves, and we skipped off to the cafeteria together.

everybody had a sandwich of sorts, a cold drink, and since we had a great pie baker in our kitchen, we all had the lemon pie. it was a feast for us, and the pie was just marvelous. the only thing wrong was that the pie was sitting on a cheap paper plate, and had been there for some time, but that didn't deter us, our hunger was too great.

we ate, did a debriefing of our morning emergency, and then chatted about other things. during this time i happened to notice one of the other nurses starring at my tray, and then they were all staring at it, and then i looked down at it. i couldn't believe my eyes-the whole bottom was gone from the paper plate! the obvious answer to that strange looking vision was that in my hunger and talking and gulping food, and i had eaten the pie, and the plate, leaving only the rim!

the group laughed so hard, no way i could swear them to secrecy, and from then on when i was on duty someone would always say 'bonnies' at the plate!"
