How does travel nursing work?

Published

I'm still taking my prereqs, so i've got a long way to go. But one of the appeals of nursing has always been the travelling aspect. My question is, how exactly does it work? I've heard of complications where nurses relocate and have to reobtain licensure in their new states/countries. As a travel nurse, do you have to go through the process of applying for a license/taking the respective board tests/waiting for approval for every location that you work in? Do states have agreements where they honor each others licenses? How about other countries? How long are the typical assignments?

Ideally, I'd like to take on contracts that allow me to spend 6-12 months in a place and then move on to somewhere else. But I'm guessing the licensure process is long enough that that wouldn't be practical. Any experience/advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
