How to prepare for working nights for the first time...?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I'm going to be looking for work as a CNA soon and am considering the nightshift, if possible. How do you prepare yourself for working nights as far as your sleep schedule goes? Any help would be much appreciated!

You get into the swing of them really quickly.

On days that I work I usually get home at 9 in the morning. I go straight to bed and sleep the rest of the day. It sounds crazy, but on my days off I also go to bed at 9 in the morning and sleep for the rest of the day (unless I have to be somewhere). I think maintaing the same sleep schedule helps me from being thrown off kilter. While at work I usually have something with caffeine to keep me awake halfway through my shift, although a more health-conscious person might try an energy bar.

Good luck with your first job.

I fall asleep less than an hour after I walk in the door for about 6-8 hours. Grab some lunch, complete some errands then catch me a quick cat nap before I get ready for work. Sleep really helps you get through your shift at night.
