I am a RN who currently works in a small town ER x5yrs, our family is moving to Costa Rica to help a couple of locals set up a free clinic in a remote village. Just wondering if anyone out there has some suggestions in how best to prepare myself for nusing in this enviroment. Such as the types of courses I should take and what type of supplies to bring with me.

Well, I would study up on parasites etc. and water cleanliness. I would also be sharp on mother-baby as that is often the most needed care as well as infection control and patient education. With ER you should be fairly prepped with all-ages of nursing care. Those are the things my friend in Panama has been working on. Good luck.

Hi. I just found this while searching for someone who had contacts in Central America to do some short-term volunteering as a nurse. There is no year on this post. Did you set up a clinic? Do you have any info/comments about finding someplace to volunteer? I am an ER nurse and would like to do ER work. Thanks.
