How to prepare for the HESI!

Published

Hello everyone, I know people are reading this forum thinking the same thing, "WHAT ARE YOUR STATS and do you have any answers or shortcuts to the test". I took my HESI August 8 2014; I say the date because I know when I would read many of these forums some of the people I would read took their HESI in 2008 or 2012. Therefore, I want to provide you with a sense of how current these scores are. I did not do too badly; well I do not think so

Reading Comprehension: 90%

Grammar: 82%

Vocab: 88%

Math: 94%

Anatomy & Physiology: 93%

In addition, I did only take the HESI one time, but before that, I registered for the Hesi exam, but had to reschedule because of time complications. Therefore, I called the prometric center and they told me they cancelled it, but when I was in there, again it said that this was my second time taking it. Therefore, I do not know if the HESI is harder the first time, or what. However, from what people tell me it is the same.

Now, when taking this test I rather studied for a month, but you should know what your study pattern is. I took the test in august, but I was preparing since May, but not seriously. I would take week breaks and really all I did was memorize the vocab on the evolve book and practice the math questions. I will break down each section of the test because I loved reading other peoples threads when they would do that.

Reading Comprehension: Whenever I would read other peoples post they would say the reading would talk about scholarly "nurse stuff" but when I took the exam it was not like that. If you have ever taken the TAKS test or SAT then it really is a breeze the only thing that I would remember is when reading a persuasion paper the key element is if you see the word "You" so you know the author is directing it toward you. In addition, when looking at the summaries I know it may sound silly, but do not choose the summary that mentions something that was not in the passage because it will not be the right one. I did not really take my time studying for this section, but I did take practice exams, which I will say in detail websites I found helpful and stuff like that.

Grammar: This was my worst section and if you are reading this thread, you will understand how. I LOVE to right, but I am more of a big picture kind of person and the little details like irk... sounding correct does not really help. I read grammar books and tried so many things, but it just didn't help a bit of advice when reading a sentence that asks you " do you use me or I" in the sentence try to read the sentence and substitute the word in there for example

"

Dr. Swanson asked ___ to go to the mall" if you said "I", it would not sound correct "me is the only thing that matters. Also, if the question asks you which word is in the incorrect spot try this trick if a word can be spelled in a different way, but sound the say and have a different meaning that is probably the correct one for example " Jon Lead the way" " Jon Led the way" the correct one is the one with " led"

Math: Really, on mine there was only conversion questions there were NO roman numeral question a couple conversion between military time and A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT FRACTIONS. This section is not hard, but it is REALLY LONG, so be careful this section as well as the reading comp section feels like forever. BTW, they let you use a calculator so for those questions that are like add 3.456 + 4532 it is kind of like easy points

Lastly, the section that I would always look for the Anatomy and physiology section. Honestly, I spent the most of my energy on this section and even though it showed if the computer asked me different questions, I would have failed. Really, this section is random I had questions talking about digestive system to what vein empties into what and so forth.

I would tell you the questions I had, but whenever I asked my friend who took it with me there is were very different. The only thing I can say is they will not ask you DEEP mind confusion questions. Questions like " where does X vein drain into" what does X muscle innervate" " " what is the major nutrient in skin"

Like seriously random you should brush up on some anatomy and really dive into this section because I am very grateful for my score, but I feel like the anatomy section doesn't prove if you know anatomy because it's so random and some people just struggle on some part harder then another.

However, I will tell you all what to focus on from what I remember. Remember the joints, cranial nerves, major arteries, and veins, endocrine system... seriously the entire endocrine system. Lymphatic but mostly the lines of defenses not the anatomy section. Digestion etc. The website I put at the bottom will help with your studying.

Here was my routine for my Hesi. The month before my Hesi, I would dedicate one week to each section for like two hrs. and if you feel comfortable beforehand you can move on because I know I only studied math and reading for like 3 days and moved on. I took a practice exam at the end of every week and did it as I was doing a real test. I timed myself, sat in the library, and used only the computer on my laptop.

Eat something with a lot of energy; do not eat something that will make you full because I promise you will feel sleepy during the test. At my prometric center, they let you leave and use the restroom in the middle of the test, Idk about for other places but that was for mine. I was so nervous I did not even try to get up.

Here are the websites.

https://sites.google.com/site/apinnerworkings/free-stuff/hesi-a2 this site has awesome A&P stuff and has a study guide for you.

This website repeats the same questions after sometime, but it helps build your morale. Doesn't worry I made like a 40% taking these test the first time.

Here are some of the books I used.

Evolve Reach admission assessment exam review: this book was cool, but the math at the back has wrong answers, btw 2.2Kg= 1pd you will thank me later.

I went to my local library or you can buy the McGraw 3 Hesi Practice test book. I like to say it help, but the questions are outdated so.

For me there were 50 Reading question, 50 grammars, 50 vocabs, and 30 Anatomy. I took the personality style and that other one, but I guessed on those because they were not graded and I did not really care.

In addition, you know your score after you are done with each section it shows you next to that section and you can get your score the same day. Therefore, that's kind of awesome. Do not be discouraged and if you have any questions just reply
