50k? 100k? 20k? 10k? Nothing? I'm going to CRNA school next year and I've heard all over the spectrum.. some people paid totally out of pocket (I applaud you), whereas many borrowed up to the total cost of attendance (tuition + living expenses).

I've been working almost eight years. Saved up most of our money by building our own home and gaining equity out of it to buy a cheaper home outright for school, also additional money in the bank, plus downgrading vehicles, etc.

I wanted to save more, but I started applying thinking there was no way I'd get in on my first application cycle but I did! We probably had $6,000 in savings when I started, but thankfully we don't have kids my husband has a steady government job with good benefits, so we just pared down all our living expenses as much as possible. I still have loans from undergrad, but I do borrow tuition plus some monthly expenses. Honestly - this is my dream job and (barring anything crazy like failing out or not passing boards) I'll be able to pay things off when I'm done. It's worth it. Really, it depends on where you are in life, with debt, and how comfortable you are adding on to your debt.

I didn't save any because I paid off as much debt before I started school. Yeah I probably could've saved more and yeah I could've worked up until school started instead of going on vacation for 2 months before starting CRNA school but hey, life's short and the income you make after school will pay it off right? Congrats on getting in! And for those of you still trying to get in-- don't let school loans deter you! The more you hold off applying for school, that's another year of CRNA salary that you're missing out on.

Everyone, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your answers so far. I was REALLY nervous and starting to think there was no way I could go to CRNA school if I had to take out just about everything in loans/financial aid. I feel so empowered and excited for what's to come!!! I hope people will keep sharing their experiences with this common fear that SRNAs-to-be have.

This is my plan for the next year and a half or maybe sooner if I get accepted to the University of Tulsa first crack. I'm going to work plenty of overtime over the next year and a half to have all of our debts paid off except for our mortgage and save as much as possible. Luckily I have been able to pay for my undergrad degree out of pocket plus some grants and scholarship so no debt there. Wife will have a steady job to take care of most of our needs but will still probably need to borrow some.

Worked for 7 years. 400k. Wife similar so thankfully I don't have to take out any loans.
