How the heck does this happen?

I got a job offer shortly before I passed my exam, took it and so far I think it’s a good fit. I’m almost finished training, been there a month.

I was floated to a different floor for my last week of orientation and overheard something disturbing, which someone later told me was true.

Someone (a nurse!) left a resident outside, in the heat. By the time the resident was found, they had severe heatstroke, a severe sunburn, and were in a full arrest. The resident was rushed to the hospital but their chances of survival are slim.

What the actual heck? How does someone forget a human being? I’ve heard of stuff like that on the news so I know it happens but I’m still bothered by it all the same. ?
