How hard is the Math portion of the exam?

Published

Hi! I take the HESI exam on the 31st and I'm freaking out because I'm not all that great in math and was wondering if we are allowed to use a calculator on the math portion???

Hello!

First thing that I want to say to you is, DO NOT FREAK OUT! I am not great in math either, and I did extremely well on the math portion. It was my best section. Things to know are:

-convert mixed numbers to fractions (and vice versa)

-know how to solve proportions and ratios (cross multiply and divide)

-know how to subtract/add/multiply/divide fractions

-know your conversions! 4 quarts in a gallon, 2 pints in a quart, 2 cups in a pint, 8 oz. in a cup (there were not many of these...maybe two, but don't miss points that you don't have to miss

-know what the prefixes for conversions indicate: milli-, deci-, centi-, etc.

-there were a few word problems, but not many. go slow on them because they try to throw you off.

-know order of operations: parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. there was one or two questions were they ask you to solve, and if you do not follow the correct order, you will get the wrong answer.

There is a calculator on the test screen. You can open it and close it whenever you need to use it. A great resource for reviewing this material is the Khan Academy on YouTube. You can go to their page and watch tutorials that will give you an overview of what you may have forgotten. It's a great resource for math.

I would also recommend that you study up on grammar. I did well on it, but it was my worst section. There were some things that I have not covered since grade school.

Okay. Thank you so much!

I am also taking the HESI A2 on the 31st. I am incredibly nervous, but optimistic. I will send vibes your way. Good luck!

Thank you! Good luck í ¼í½€ to you as well!

Hey! How did today turn out for you?

Great! Got an 85% in the Math part. I was so surprised because when I started they started asking basic questions and then the hard part came lol But overall I did very well! How did yours go?

Hello & congrats on your score...Did the math section have a lot of conversion questions? Can you tell me what to expect?... I'm a little nervous about the Math.

Hey! I scored a 98% on the math, and a 92% overall on the HESI. If it helps anyone, I took the A2 (D version) I am not sure if that is more watered down, or what it means, but I remember that.

Math was originally my biggest worry, but DO NOT sweat it. The bulk of questions are +-×÷ of fractions and ratio:proportions. Be careful though, some fraction questions were presented in a set like 3, for example 2/3 + 5/8 + 1/2, so make sure you are comfortable handling an extra fraction in the mix. Aside from that, if you use the Elsevier HESI 4th Edition study book, you will overstudy. I only had 3 unit conversion questions, I had no questions about celcius to fahrenheit. I did have a few word problems, but most of them fairly basic, you just have to be able to identify which operation to choose to perform.

Maybe 5-10 of the problems were fill in, so you did not have the luxury of multiple choice.

For me, the areas that need most studying are grammar and reading comprehension. The vocabulary section is VERY close to what appears in the study book. If you know those words, you will be fine.
