How to get an IL RN license with a current CA RN license

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

I'm confused and need help. I have a RN license from CA and want to get an IL license. Do I go through IL to get it and how? I looked up the IL licensor board but couldn't figure it out, where to find the right form or what??!! How long does it take? I already have a job offer and might need it by July. Do they give temporaries if you have a job lined up?? Please help me! :banghead:

Google Illinois Department of Professional Regulation for information on licensure by endorsement. The IDPR is notoriously slow in processing requests, so if you plan to start work in July, you need to get your application in place ASAP!

That doesn't sound good. I will apply at once!! Thanks for the tip.

You will need to fill out the application for license by endorsement. You can also apply for a temporary permit if you want. I would recommend getting the paper work started as soon as possible. The following link is the application packet. I hope this helps, and good luck!

I didn't think the application was that long. I AM concerned over how long it will take once I submit everything since they ask you to send forms from the states where you have a license along with the application (whereas other states I've applied to have the BON send it directly to the new state). Any idea on how long for a temporary?

I went through this same process recently, and it ended up that California sent my verification directly to Illinois- I didn't find this out until I got my license in the mail.

BUT......please know that you don't need this to get a temporary license in Illinois! It is confusing to read through all the fine print, but you can apply to get a temporary license (which will be issued within 14 days of receipt of the application) with a copy of your transcript, current nursing license, and the completed application and fee. So you don't need to wait for California to send that, because it took them 6 weeks in my case.

hey angie, i was wondering... did you have to have the actual license in your hand to send off that stuff for a temporary or say i take the boards on 16th and i'll know if i passed in like 2 days, can i just have my license number on the application? thanks, jen

If you are an Internationally educated nurse, my advice is to stay as far from Illinois as you can. I am a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in three other jurisdictions of the US. Instead of requesting my file from the State of original licensure (CA, btw), this State makes you re-submit all of your trancripts. The result- a Nurse with tons of experience, I have been out of work for almost a year, but the IDFPR could care less. Had we known this, we would have never moved out here.

I recently received my CA RN license and I am relocating to Chicago, Il in two months. What is the process? I am getting fingerprinted tomorrow and I know that there is an application process, but it seems so complicated. I know that I am suppose to fill out the endorsement portion, but do I need to get the school I received my BSN to complete the form also, or do I need just a transcript? Please help....their app and website it too wordy for me....lol. It's giving me a headache in addition to looking for work also.
