How to deal with demanding, somewhat confused patient

Published

I am in my first semester and don't seem to have any idea how to handle my new patient. She is somewhat confused. She does have more "clear" times but turns around and forgets things. The biggest problem for me is that did not want me to leave the room for anything. Whenever I would try to go, even if I promised to be right back, she'd say, "Well, I'll probably fall out of the bed now and break my hip again." I'm not sure how much of what she was doing was real forgetfulness and how much was just manipulation. If I have her as my patient again next week, what can I do when I need to leave the room?

I also have difficulty with getting her onto a bedpan or bed pad because she has severe pain and I need her to turn both ways to get the pad or pan under her. I somehow just can't seem to get her to turn one way and then the other. I have no finesse.
