How does a Canadian NS get accredited by the NLN? I want the Mayo Clinic Extern pg

Published

Hi, gotta a couple of Questions!

Im a canadian student that wants to apply for the MAYO Clinic summer III Extern Program. They sent me an email saying:

The program requires that the school you are attending is accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (CCNE) or the National League of Nurses (NLN). We would also require a work authorization to work in the United States.

1) How would i go about getting my nursing School accredited by these organizations? My school is accredited by the Canadian association of college and universities...

2) The application requires that you have a SSN and a work visa. does anyone know who i contact regarding this...can i even get a SSN if im canadian? I phoned the coordinator at the mayo clinic and she said that they have never had any canadians wanting to apply but they are allowed to apply. They also told me that they werent sure who im supposed to contact regarding the work visa, ssn etc. I am not familliar at all with USA policies so any help would be appreciated!

3) Should i just apply for a clinical extern here in Canada (there are some at the Hospital for Sick Children, etc along with other various hospitals) or would having an externship at the Mayo Clinic be an advantage over a Canadian hospital program?

Thanks for helping me (appreciate it alot!!! :)

I was involved in the NLN accreditation for my school this year. It is a very lengthy process. You need your director to want to put into writing how they meet the requirements of the NLN. The finished product was about 3 inches thick at my school. Then they will visit your school and your school needs to pay for the NLN's accomodations and transportation. The school needs about 6 months to a year to prepare. I hope this helps you in deciding what to do.

wow~ ok thanks for the heads up im definetly not doing it now ill just apply to clinical externships in canada. thats way too much time and effort involved!

I am glad I could help and good luck with your studies!
