I just started a new assignment in Seattle and my housing situation is a nightmare. The neighborhood is not a safe neighborhood at all. I arrived on a friday night and called the emergency after hours # and was told that if I felt unsafe to leave and check into a hotel and that my company would work on finding me new housing monday morning. I was just told by the housing department that they can't get out of the lease but that they will move me to a different unit that doesn't smell of curry (the place smelled so bad it was amazing). I wanted to be able to walk to work and I don't even feel safe walking to the corner here. They are telling me that since I requested a place within walking distance and ok'd them to go ahead when they found this place there is nothing they can do. I've never been to Seattle. I do not know the neighborhoods here. I would assume that a housing department would check out the neighborhoods of the places where they are placing their travelers before forwarding a housing option for me to pick from. Does anyone know if I have any options here? I'm currently staying with other friends of mine who are travelers in the city, and if they don't give me other housing options I can stay with them but I really don't know what else to do.

You should raise hell to your company and the housing people. The only research done in regards to your housing is how much it costs them.. You should demand a new contract, (giving you a housing stipend) so you can make your own arrangements.
