Hours of Work in a Hospital Setting

Hi everyone! Good morning!

I wanted to know what are the typical hours for a CNA. What are day hours, night hours.

I want to know what I'm in for. I hear hospitals have long grueling hours! But I'd love to be in that setting rather than a nursing home. I have a sister I take back and forth from school and was wondering if I could do it-

Most hospital settings have both 8 and 12 hour shifts-on my floor as CNA's we work a combination of both...typically 2 8's and 2 12's...it's nice because you get an extra day off a week. However, I know of some floors on the same hospital where the CNA's only work 8's.

The typical shifts at a hospital are 7-3 3-11 and 11-7 for the 8's and 7-7 a.m. and 7-7 pm for the 12's. Again, it will depend upon your floor/hospital and it's policy, but they may hire you for all days or all nights, so you would be only working those designated shifts or you may be a day/evening rotater or a day/night rotater so you do half and half.

Hope this helps.

OH yeah, this helps. You said most hospitals. Where do you live?

I'm in Virginia. My understanding is that the majority of hospitals follow a very similar shift pattern, although I have heard of some people talking about hospital shifts that are an hour difference in the start end time. I'd call the staffing dept of the hospitals you want to work at and ask, they should be happy to give you that info. Good luck!

Okay I'll call all the hospitals!
