Hospital Nurse Educator

Published

ARe any of you Hospital Nurse Educators?

What are your main job functions/roles?

Interviewing for a position like this and wondering what others have for duties.

Thanks.

I work in Staff Development. It's a department that does a lot of things. For example:

1. Orientation of new staff

2. Annual education for all staff (meeting regulatory requirements)

3. On-going staff development of all staff

4. Often get involved in hospital committees -- creating and reviewing policies and procedures, quality improvement, etc.

5. Reviewing the quality of care and developing education programs to improve performance

6. Coordinate student activity within the hospital

etc.

I recommend you look at the journal "Journal for Nurses in Staff Development" and the NNSDO website (Nationa Nursing Staff Development Organization) for more information on the specialty.

The specialty is called "Nursing Professional Development" and yes, there is a certification available through the ANCC for it. Also, note that there is a new model coming out for that specialty (to be pubished in August.) Having seen some of the preliminary work on that model, I am looking forward to it as I believe it will clarify and expand the specialty a bit.

I see you already have experience in Staff Development. What is different in this new role you are applying for that is/was not a part of staff development?

I am a member of NNSDO and receiving JNSD journal. I'll refresh my thoughts on this-look at some back issues.

This is an educator position for a specific area in a hospital setting, I believe there will be staff development as part of the position as well.

Thanks for your input!

We have a structure that is mixed. Some of the people in my department are unit-based: they focus primarily on 1 unit. Some of us focus on hospital-wide activities and are housed in a centralized office. But we are all in the same department, make the same salary, report to the same director, etc.
