Hospice Team Interview Monday

Published

Hi all...

I am new to this forum and to Hospice. I have been an RN for 26 years - very varied fields; OR, L&D, Onc, IV therapy, Legal Nurse Consulting for a medical mal defense firm (defending hospitals and nurses :p ). I have had a successful interview with the director but I am scheduled to be interviewed by the Hospice Team. Can anyone offer any insight as to what I might expect? They also suggested I bring my own questions and I have several; caseload, whether or not they use standard orders, obviously call, mileage reimbursement, how often they have children on service... Can anyone suggest anything I might be missing? I have walked closely with hospice both in personal situations and patient situations and am absolutely thrilled to have an opprutunity to enter this field. Thanks in advance for any responses. Oh - I must say that I have already learned a great deal by reading this forum. I've started at page 48 and worked backwards. hehe.

Rubie,

I am dissappointed that noone responded to you, as this would have helped me a great deal tomorrow at my interview for a Hospice position. Can you tell me how yours' went?

Thanks,

Emilie

Emilie - Sorry for the late reply.

I found a lot of answers as to what to expect at an interview for a hospice position, as well as some really important questions for me to ask those conducting the interview in previous posts. Based on that, I wasn't disappointed at the lack of response from the board.

I had already been interviewed by the nursing director and the team interview was really to determine if I was a good fit for the team. The team consisted of a nurse, medical social worker, chaplain, volunteer coordinator and director of nurses. They focused a lot on the "heart" part of hospice nursing, as well as the need for flexibility, good organizational skills, etc. I had a good list of questions (thanks to this board) which took up the rest of the interview. I specifically asked about being in a home in which you did not feel safe, as that was a recent thread here, and about standard orders, and caseload and visit expectations, orientation, call, mileage, etc.

Bottom line, Learn as much as you can about hospice nursing before you interview - this is a great place to start.

As for me, I got the job and couldn't be more thrilled. I have known for quite some time that hospice nursing is my calling... The folks I will be working with consider their jobs a "ministry". The support of the organization (hospital) seems fabulous. They are a close team - one of which I am honored to now be a part.

Thanks to everyone who posts on this board. You are so awesome about sharing your knowledge and support. I have already learned so much from you all.

As for you, Emilie - I hope the interview went well.

Hi Rubie,

Thanks so much for the reply. The interview did go well, so well in fact that I was offered a position!! I am torn though, because the full time position was just filled, and so they only have a PRN position available. I feel in my heart that this is where I belong, however I can't do just PRN. The other job I was offered with a company that cares for people with developmentally disabilities is a full time position. I just didn't feel it with them, like I did with Hospice though. Anyhoo, thanks for writing me back, I hope I can work this out some way.

Emilie
