homecare to ob

Published

I have been in homecare for approx one year now, but it has never been my true love/passion. I would love to go from homecare to ob, but no one around here (Massachusetts) will hire without experience. What should I do? Is it too late for me? Should I just give up?

It has been my experience that larger teaching and referral hospitals seem more willing to hire and train new grads and nurses who lack experience in OB and other specialties. Are you anywhere near a large teaching hospital that might offer an extended orientation or internship?

Would you consider NICU as a means of getting your foot in the door? Most large NICUs hire new grads and offer extensive orientations.

Failing all that, how about asking to be trained for OB homecare. Does your agency see OB patients?

I have seen ob patients in the homecare setting as well as newborns and premature infants. I occas do heel sticks and a variety of other skilled visits, sometimes those patients are few and far and then other times plenty. The problem is that I took a HHA Supervisor position with one agency and only have time for a few hours of ped private duty. I am thinking about switching to another agency closer to home and maybe they can give me the ob patients, since they currently do not have a nurse for those patients and I do have experience in it. I want to give up my salary position, but am a little nervous going to per diem, afraid of not having enough hours. I think I will speak to HR today about possibly getting all of the ob patients, maybe that will satisfy my need. All the hospitals, lg and sm want years of ob exp., as well as NICU, I have tried in the past. Thanks for the advice!
