Hiring into a military hospital to a different specialty possible?

Hi All,

I couldn't find this in a forum search, so I'll just ask. I've done Med-Surg for 2 years and want to do something else eventually: ICU, ER, or maybe even L&D. Anyway, recently, I've come across a good chance to get hired into a GS position at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. What I'm wondering is...Will they hire me only into Med-Surg, or can I go somewhere else? I don't know if they train people for different areas of nursing, and since it would require much training for them if I, for example, were to be hired into the ER, I would understand if they don't. I'd be more than willing to start in Med-Surg and then transfer later if that's what it takes, though.

Anyway, I just had nothing better to do at this time of night than bug you all, so thanks for any clues. G'nite! ;)

If you have the opportunity to get a GS position then definately go for it! The pay and benefits are great! I know the active duty nurses move around to different specialties alot. Not sure if the GS nurse's can or do. I've never asked because I love where i'm at and have no intention of leaving. At our facility they strongly encourage cross training to a related specialty. I do L&D and have worked several days in nursery, postpartum and the OR for csections just to be exposed to those areas. We are expected to crosstrain at some point to become able to work in each area. Ask human resources about switching to different areas. I sure would get my foot in the door however you're able to! Then switch later if possible. Good luck!

That would definitely be interesting getting to switch around every now and then. It would make it easier to find another type of nursing I like, too. Hmmmm.... It's probably worth trying out. I'm just scared of change like everyone else I guess.
