HESI 1000 max points graded against 1125?

Published

My school grades our Critical Thinking HESI Exam against 1125 points but the highest possible points for the exam is 1000. They said they do it for a reason and have always done it this way. They did not give the 'said reason.' They require an 850 to pass which is fine but even if you make a perfect 1000 that is only 88% of the 1125. I am wondering if all schools do this (or something like it) or is it just mine? For us, it is counted as a test grade. I do not think it is fair to include points in our overall test points that are not possible for us to achieve. Are all nursing programs like this?

You should probably ask them for the actual reason. It is unfair grading practice to make it impossible to achieve higher than an 88% on a test. Maybe they give extra points for certain answers. Maybe you get credit just for taking it on time that make up for the extra points. Maybe they need points to be 1125 so they bump you points, ie, you get 85% of 1000 points so they actually give you 85% of 1125 points. I don't know. Seems very odd.

The reason they gave is that you have to make an 850 (76%) to pass and to read our syllabus. The syllabus says 850=76%. It does not say anything about total points. The sophmores said we are wasting our time and that they are not going to change it. Regardless, you are right. It is an unfair grading practice. There are no extra points or anything to make them up. They are having a faculty meeting Thursday and 1 student can attend so we will see what they say. We are just looking for a logical reason and so far have not received one. Unfortunatley, we have another test like this and it is the same way. That is a lot of points in our overall grade.

Ya thats BS. out of 1000, 850 would be 85%, but roughly 76% out of 1125. Thats stupid and there has to be somewhere to complain. They cant just automatically deduct 125 points before even taking an exam. I have never heard of something like this. Not all students strive for barely passing an exam. Many want to get A's. If they want to make the minimum passing score 85% they should just make that the policy. Not essentially give a bogus point deduction.

The theoretical maximum on the HESI is 1500. I scored over 1,000, but it required quite a bit of prep. I used a HESI review from Elsevier Evolve.

They changed it!! 3 class representatives went to the faculty meeting today and succeeded!! The students contacted HESI and recorded the calls and every rep from HESI said the highest possible score for this particular Critical Thinking HESI exam is 1000. They really had no argument. My overall average went up almost 3 points! boogalina, this was the critical thinking HESI that is only 30 questions. It clearly stated this exam was 0-1000 points. I scored a 940 but was given a grade of 84%. I now have a 94%. I scored that 'A' by 1 point! A 93 is considered a 'B' in this class. Thankful! Thanks for commenting!

Ah, that explains it...the exit exam goes up to 1500. I'm glad you and your classmates were able to get this resolved!
