I took the HESI exam today and passed with 76%. Although it is not the highest score, I passed. I scored the best on vocabulary(90%), grammar (84%), and reading (76%). I have read mostly every post in the forum regarding the HESI A2 exam and found much of the posts to be very helpful.
I used the Evolve Admission Assessment Guide book and I will say for me it helped a little. It is best used for the math and vocabulary sections of the test. It is also helpful with the Chemistry section.
Here is my breakdown of what to expect:
Math - Lots of proportions, conversions (mg, kilograms, liters to milliliters, meters to kilometers,) and adding, subtraction, multiplying, dividing fractions.
for example, 3:x::5:300 or 6 grams = ? mg. There was also adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. There was 1 question on military time. Just a few word problems ..
The calculator comes in handy. When I used the calculator, I wish there would have been a mouse to use. Would have saved a lot of time using the calculator. If you study the Evolve guide... you will do really good in this section. But, study the guide.
Reading - Read the paragraph and be able to determine the what the story is about, what the author is suggesting in the story, and some questions were very easy. I missed a few questions because I was soooo tired and failed to read the passage all the way through.
Chemistry - very basic. I have never taken Chemistry, but the guide helped a lot. I received 72% in this section. I was surprised. This section was far easier than the Biology section for me.
A & P - Know what the lipids, cell membrane, lysomes, etc are.
Biology - This section asked questions I've never seen before. Including one about a microscope...there was a math question about volume in this section.
Vocabulary - For me it was easy. Study the words in the Evolve guide and just read the sentence to determine what the meaning is. Process of elimination if needed.
Grammar - Read the sentences carefully. Know contractions, dependent clause, when to use whom.
I also took the critical thinking section and received 810. Don't know what that means still searching:) This section asked about nursing scenarios.
For example, there are 4 patients all with different issues and you have to select who you would see first.
Personality and learning styles were not graded, but interesting.
The McGraw Hill book is also a good resource.
