HERZING Birmingham Campus RN Program

Published

Anyone else starting or is already in the nursing program at Herzing Birmingham Campus? I start soon and wanted to talk to fellow students to see how it is and what to expect.

I just completed the Herzing ADN program at Herzing University the Birmingham campus. I also completed the LPN program as well through Herzing. During your first week at Herzing you're going to meet teachers and staff that say "trust their process" and you will become a nurse. What they don't tell you is by the time you finish their program you will be a Excellent nurse, but you will. You will ready for whatever the nursing world throws at you, you will be taught more the just how to be a basic nurse, they will expose you to things and explain diseases processes in a way you never thought about. Herzing has excellent teachers, amazing clinical instructors and a very loving supportive staff. And don't worry about finding a job after you graduate because you will, you'll have more offers for jobs than you can accept. And passing the NCLEX...by the time you get to the NCLEX test you will find that you are more than prepared. Herzing isn't easy by any means, but I am a testimony that I trusted Herzing process and now I am RN, passed NCLEX in one try.

Lovinrn Thank you sooo much for your response.!! I'm looking forward to it!

First of all I wanted to say hello, and my name is Scott

I am attending Herzing currently in the ADN program, but I also got my LPN at Herzing last year. My story is that I've wanted to be a nurse my whole life. When I was younger, back in the early 2000's I attended UAB school of nursing, but unfortunately I had to withdraw twice within a 4 year period, because of some serious family health issues with my parents. I took care of them for a long time, and I don't regret my decision to do so. After a while my father passed away, so I moved my mother in with me. After she got better I started to think about my life, and what I wanted to do. Honestly, at that point I had all but given completely up on my dream to be a nurse. The more the days passed by the more I thought about it, and after about 3 months God opened another door for me, and I jumped through immediately.

Now, this brings us to Herzing. When I began to think about my next step Herzing was put on my heart and mind. I had never been there, and didn't know very much about the University. When the time came I went directly to Herzing, and didn't really even consider any other school. I just felt led there , because it was where I was supposed to be. I went in the very first day to speak with an advisor, and they spent over 3 hours with me catching me up, and covering all my questions and concerns in detail. This made a big impression on me, but even at that point I still didn't know just how special Herzing was. I began my classes very nervous, and wondered after all the time that had gone by, could I keep up and do what it took. I found out quickly that I was not alone, and had an amazing staff that actually cared about me and wanted to see me succeed.

At Herzing, It all starts at the top with Mr. Tommy Dennis(President) & The amazing Cynthia Hall( DON & BOSS) these two have worked tirelessly to bring Herzing the reputation it deserves, and much more. Mr.Dennis runs the faculty, and they are wonderful, from the advisors who will bend over backwards to help you, and get you straightened out however you need, and then you have the financial aid staff that will take care of things for you, and you don't even know it's being handled. They make sure the only thing you need to worry about is to study for your classes. The faculty is full of amazing, friendly, kind, and supportive individuals that you will come to love and appreciate. When you walk in the door you feel welcome, and Ms. Mary is right there at the desk to tell you God Bless & Good morning, and then 9 times out of 10 you have Mr.Dennis (The President of the University) standing in the hallway door waiting to greet students, and ask how you are doing, and is there anything that He can do for you. If you're in a bad mood or have something on your mind, he''ll even give you a pep talk to make you feel better, and let you know that someone cares how you're feeling. That faculty staff trickles down from him, because they all follow his lead of caring and commitment to the students well being. The faculty also includes Brian Grindle who will be there to guide you through every step, and show you how to get help, and who to get it from, and where to get it from. Before you graduate he will make sure that during an interview process to get a job, that you will be the best equipped possible hire, and how to give your best in an interview.

Now,the outstanding nursing instructor staff that is led by Cynthia Hall(DON & BOSS), Same thing goes here too, because the instructors follow her lead to provide each student with excellent nursing skills, and a vast amount of knowledge, so there will be no situation that you can't handle as a nurse. The nursing instructors will stay late to help you, stay after class to help you, and do extra tutorials to help you. I personally have seen several give up their lunch time to help students. The class instructors do whatever takes to make sure you get the knowledge you need, and every instructor is extremely fair, and makes it their goal to see you graduate. Mrs.Hall made it her mission to bring in great staff that she knew would give their very best to educate and guide the students.

As I said, the nursing staff begins with Mrs.Hall, and she is always there with an open door to answer any students questions, and provide advice, or just ask how you're doing, and she really means. To provide an example, when I graduated with My LPN I had an issue with the Board of Nursing concerning some of my information when I applied for my license. I was so frustrated, and worried, but she immediately came to get me, and brought me to her office, and then she told me that we would not rest, and she would not leave until this was taken care of. After contacting the Board I had to write and submit a letter. Mrs.Hall sat down and helped me write it, and walked me through each step of what to do. When we finished the letter and information for the ABN it was long before I needed to have it in, so she took my letters and placed them in an envelope , and mailed them overnight for me, so I could get it done quickly. With Mrs. Hall you're never alone, because she always has your back, and sometimes you won't even know it, but she's putting out fires for you, so you don't have to worry. I've walked in her office before with an issue, and before I could get it out of my mouth, she quickly looks up at me, and says, "oh yeah, I've already done that, it's no problem anymore". For the rest of the staff, beginning with Mrs. Donahoo who will go over things with you 5000 times if she has to just to make sure you understand, and she'll also be there to talk you off a ledge when you're stressing out. Then Mrs. Cheryl Davis who has that gift to be fun, funny, and make her class a lot of fun while learning, but trust me, when it's time to be serious, and go to work she can do that too, very effectively. Then Mrs. Lurie, who is the OB/Maternal guru. This woman teaches straight from her own notes, and knows EVERYTHING about OB. She too will be there to guide you, and lift you up when you're so busy you can't see straight. then Mrs. Lavas who is the resident Mental health master, and one of the best clinical instructors that I have ever known, because at clinicals she will get right in there with you, and protect you, and always try to make sure you get the skills you need. Then, Mrs.Parker for med-surg who is a great instructor that's very fair, and do what it takes to guide and protect you, and one of the kindest human beings alive. Then Mr. Stith who teaches Anatomy/microbiology , and will educate you on every bone, muscle, cell in the body, and be unbelievably exited while doing so, because he loves his job.

Then you have your clinical instructors, with the famous Mrs.M. Who will make you a nursing soldier and gladiator before it's all over. then Mr. Cabazor who will teach you great knowledge, but also how and when to use it. He will even take what you're going over in class, and spend time teaching you, and lecturing to help you with your upcoming exam, just because he wants you to do well. Then Mrs. Siegal who going to teach you peds like you've never known

In other support faculty you have Mrs. Kathy & Mrs. Susan who will make sure all you I's are dotted, and all your T's are crossed, so you can go focus on your clinical work, and not be bothered with paperwork.

There are others, and I don't want to leave anyone out, because Herzing is filled with awesome people who truly want to see you succeed and have you hold your dream in your hand. Herzing is home to me, and I'm so proud to be a graduate and student there, because I now know that Herzing is where I was supposed to be all along. Mr. Dennis and his staff & Mrs.Hall and her staff have made Herzing what it is today, and they have put Herzing out there as one of the best nursing schools around, and they're not done yet, because they continue to work hard to make Herzing even better down the road.

Last, but not least, one more example...When it came time to take my NCLEX I was scared to death and so nervous. I soon found out that I had the biggest and best cheering squad ever who prayed for me, called to check on me, and waited with me to see if I passed. Herzing is Home and family, and soon you'll see that. I wish you all the best, and when you need help, ask for it, because these people WANT TO SEE YOU SUCCEED!!!

So many great people that I knew I would leave someone out, and this person really helped me get through my LPN year. Mr. Jonathan is the tech support at Herzing, but so much more. All the classes are upgraded with awesome computers and software, and he makes it all come into place for us. If it's fixing a projector for power point lecture or setting up lock down for exams he's the guy. It's not easy either, because Herzing continues to grow and add more and more all the time, and he has to work overtime keeping it humming along just so we can have class. Also, he's my friend too, I was the only guy in my graduating class, and while I liked all the ladies I still needed a buddy to talk with sometimes, and he was always there, and happy to let me take refuge in his office during breaks. He also represents all the people there at Herzing, and how each person goes above and beyond there job to make sure that Herzing is home and an amazing school...I am so excited and honored to be part of the future there, and graduate with my RN....I couldn't have gotten my LPN or be pursuing my RN if it wasn't for my BLESSED LORD guiding me to Herzing and the amazing people there HE put in my path to see me through.......THANK YOU MY FATHER...and thank you Herzing University

I absolutely love Herzing! I'm so glad I decided to go there. The class sizes are small and the professors and faculty are ALWAYS willing to help with whatever you need, as long as you're putting in the effort. I think the thing I love most about it is how they prepare you every step of the way for NCLEX. They give you so many resources and tools to utilize and at the end of the program, you will have an entire class just for NCLEX preparation. It's a very condensed and fast paced program, so you have to be ready to spend most all of you time on school. I recieved my LPN from Herzing and I am currently wrapping up my last semester in the RN program. I always recommend Herzing to anyone that is considering a career in nursing!

Hi, I was considering going to Herzing in Birmingham but was worried about the school not having a National Nursing accreditation and was wondering if anyone has had problems finding a job at a major hospital like UAB? Or anywhere else?

Since Herzing is a new program have you had a hard time finding a job? I'm a little worried about the program not having a nursing accreditation.
