HELP! I need your advice....

Hello, I'm still in nursing school but will be graduating in December. Since you all are new grads I was just wondering what the best advice you can give me about finding a job. Many people have told me that I should work on the Med/Surg floor for awhile to get some experience but that isn't what I really want to do as a nurse. What I would like to do is work in the labor and delivery unit but i'm not sure if i'll get hired as a new nurse....What do you all think? Go for my dream job?

honestly, the way the economy is right now...take what you can get!

One of my classmates did just that and got it--she got hired in postpartum. It didn't happen right out of school...in fact, it took her a few months. But it's closer to what she really wants to do (L&D) than med-surg would be.

I also didn't go right into med-surg and I'm not regretting it a bit. Med-surg will always be there if/when I want to go back to it. Meanwhile, I'm learning just as much about time management, prioritization and developing my skills in psych nursing as I would have on any med-surg floor...ok, maybe the skill set is a bit different--no Foleys but many more IMs ;)

IMO, go for it! If L&D is what you want to do, then start aiming for it now. Like the prior poster said, the job market is bad and you may not get it right away, but at least you will have tried and you can work med-surg while you work your way towards L&D.

Also, if you do get L&D right away, you could always pick up a med-surg PRN position later on if you feel like it.
