Help with Diabetes

My grandma was having some urinary problems a couple of months ago, when they found she had glucose in her urine. They suspected diabetes, So they told her to check her sugar 3x daily and come back in six months, they also gave her a menu to go from. Well, she is haveing problems with getting her sugar to the appropriate level and knowing what & when to eat. She calls the doctors office numerous times, but they are not helpful at all. They told her they didn't have time to return everyone of her phone calls.:angryfire (What happened to patient teaching? If they had explained to her exactly what was going on while she was there, we would not have this problem, but I guess they were to busy to give a crap) She has no idea what is going on with her body and how to control b/c the rude, ignorant nurses and doctor will not help her. I have not been in school long enough to even give her suggestions. We tried getting books and looking on the internet, but we're not sure if we are in the right direction, b/c her levels flucuate (sp?) a lot, (especially high in the morning). She finally made an appointment with an Endocrinologist to get to the root of the problem, but she can't see him til January. Anybody have any suggestions on food, etc in the mean time? Since we are having to get this info ourselves, your suggestions can't hurt. Thank you.

Six months? January? This sounds crazy to me.

What health plan is she on or, does she have one? Do whatever you can to change doctors or whatever so that she can get treatment immediately. If she's suffering from diabetes, you can't afford to wait six months to get treatment. Diabetes often requires medications to reduce blood sugar levels, not just diet.

My husband is a diabetic and, believe me, they did not tell him to wait six months after they first discovered his high blood sugar.

yup, they told her to wait six months.........and she can't see the Endo doc b/ he is booked til January.........i will tell her to get another opinion, but she is so frustrated with her current doctors office and the staff there, that i think she has her mind set on going to Endo b/c he will be able to be specific with her instead of saying "we think it's this, so come back later".........Thanks a lot for the responses!
