Help! Any advice for new grad moving to Portland?

Published

I had planned on moving to Portland, OR following graduation in May. I have been looking for jobs online, however, I haven't found any nurse internships for new graduates. I did see that one hospital has a new grad program starting in October of 08, but I honestly can't wait that long to find work. If anyone has any advice for me, I would be so very grateful. Thanks!

I don't have time to post now, but I'm originally from there (just moved like two days ago lol!) and I know they are always hiring, even new grads-you just have to find the right place (sometimes they don't advertise) PM me a reminder and I"ll do some looking for you!

Thanks so much! I would appreciate any leads.....

This probably isn't the advice you were looking for, exactly, but i would live near the train ("light rail"). Our daughter moved there last Aug. and uses it and her bike for everything--doesn't even own a car. :smokin:

Excellent advice! Anywhere near "Tri-Met" is a good plan (that is the Tri-county metro transit authority-there are light rail trains, trolleys (I think, but only in certain areas like downtown) and buses.

If you would like to get together some weekend I can show you around town (where to shop, where to go for fun stuff, etc)

If you can, post back where you have looked/applied (or PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting publicly) so I don't tell you to try somewhere you have already tried!

I have personal experience with this hospital, the quality of the nursing staff that I encountered was EXCEEDINGLY excellent, and all said they were happy with their jobs (I have never worked there myself, only volunteered)

It is Portland Adventist Medical Center

Info re their new grad policies:

You’ll find the new graduate program at Adventist Medical Center to be less formal than some. We hire new grads year-round as positions are available. New grads are welcome to apply for any Staff RN position posting that does not have a specific experience requirement listed. To apply, simply fill out the online application for the position you are interested in.

The majority of our new graduates are hired into our Medical/Surgical units. There are also some opportunities for positions in Telemetry, ICU, and Behavioral Health. In addition, our other specialty areas (such as Surgery, Family Birth, etc.) will occasionally post new graduate opportunities. These postings will specifically say they are open to new graduates.

General orientation for all new hires, including new RN graduates, begins the first Monday of each month. Orientation consists of one day of general hospital orientation with the remainder of that week and the next spent in Nursing Classroom Orientation. Included in orientation are 18-20 preceptor shifts.

At Adventist Medical Center, we love new grads! We love your energy and your excitement and we want to make sure you feel supported as you start your career. We hope you’ll see—through our orientation program, our loan repayment program*, our preceptors and more—that we value you and your contributions. We’re committed to your success.

Will post more info as I come across it. I really like this hospital as far as location, it's near a major freeway, but on the outskirts of town-so you could definately avoid the freeway for your commute, they are building a Tri Met light rail stop right near by (and you can ride the bus there already) they are doing a multi million dollar expansion/remodel project...plus it is close enough to town that you can get just about anywhere quickly (only like 60 mins from skiing and hiking!
