HCA facilities...

Published

I've been offered a position at a hospital that's half the commute than where I presently work. This hospital is offering the schedule I need to fit school in, a 12 min commute and pay over what I was looking for.. It happens to be a HCA hospital. Here's my question...is there anything I should be weary of? I do know that they're getting a new CEO because the current one is retiring after 19rs of service. I've only worked in one hospital since coming to the U.S and that's a teaching hospital owned by the med school here so I don't have anything to go on. I know that with new administration there's always the potential for restructuring, but should I be worried?

Hi Shirley, I worked for an HCA facility for 7 years. One thing to keep in mind that it is a for profit corporation which means that the almighty dollar is the bottom line. Costs are kept to the minimum and that sometimes means that staffing is too. We would close off floors and lay off staff on a regular basis. But that may have just been the area that the hospital was located in. The pay scale was average and overtime was discouraged. We went through a lot of OR managers too. But that was just my experience. Anyway good luck in what ever you decide.

Thanks for your advice. I decided to take the position because overall they are a better fit for what I'm looking for right now. I'll be working 12 hrs Wed-Thurs-Fri which is perfect for my school schedule (class on Mon-Tue), plus I'll be making more there and my commute there is 1/2 the time than my present job. Besides, my present place is driving me nuts, I've started posts on turnover times and staff turnover rates to give you an idea of my present work environment. So I'm really looking forward to this new position, it's a lot of new stuff I'm going to have to get used to but I'm looking forward to it.
