Hate my specialty

Published

To make a long story short....I chose a specialty that I do not feel is a good fit for me. This job kind of fell into my lap while I was in nursing school and it was tough to get a job during those rough couple of months so i accepted it. I'm currently in a specialty that I have no intention of staying in for the long term. Frankly, I feel stuck. My boyfriend is currently in law school in Austin and I am living in Dallas. I plan on moving to Austin so I had been thinking of applying to Seton and St. David's hospitals. I really want to go into med surg for a couple of years to bring my nursing skills back up. I guess what I'm asking for is some good advice. I've only been a nurse for 7 months and I feel as though I have made the wrong career choice from the get go. How can I secure a job with Seton/St. David's and should I just be honest and outright in my interviews? I still qualify for the GN internships since I have less than a year's worth of experience. Any advice is very very appreciated. Thanks, colleagues!

If you are moving, why not apply for a new specialty. You do not

need to say why you are changing. Just let them know you would like

to expand your nursing experience and education by working at

their hospital in med/surg. Take some ceus or seminars in m/s if they

are available .

When I moved to another state, there were no jobs in my specialty,

psych in my area. I tried family practice. I loved it!

So best wishes to you, nursing is unique that you can work in different

specialties and if you find one you are passionate about you can

settle there. If not, explore other options...

Not too many fields have that type of flexibility.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I feel like I have to offer up an explanation because they'll see what I've done on my resume. I was going to be honest about the fact that I love patient interaction and I get ZERO of that where I work now. I just hope it doesn't look like I'm lazy or indecisive or anything bad like that

You need to do what you feel comfortable with. Just focus on the positive about your practice

and what you can bring to the new employer in the new specialty.

Nursing is a career of many specialties. You can change specialties just because you want to, I don't think it requires a lengthly conversation on an interview, especially since you have less then a year of nursing experience.

Just my 2 cents

good luck

Thank you guys. I'm going to send out a flood of applications this upcoming month. I'm keeping my fingers crossed
