Haldol - Psychosis - Dementia

Published

Hi everyone, hoping you've all been well. So, I was reviewing a patient chart, and noticed for a dementia patient, he was prescribed 2mg Haldol IM, and 1mg Cogentin IM.  For you psych nurses, or general nurses that have come across this situation before, does that seem like a lot of haldol for a non violent psychosis patient ? I know he was having delusions of his deceased wife needing to be picked up from work (poor guy).

Part 2: Also, I would imagine this is a one time thing, I read symptoms should improve in 2 weeks. I read there's also tablet form haldol to help maintain patient from psychosis, but not thrilled about this med being given long term for elderly patient.,.,.,.,.
