It depends on what you're looking for in a neighborhood. I used to live there and I loved it! For me it was perfect because it fit into my budget and it was close to the hotspots (midtown, downtown, buckhead). I could take back roads to get around so I didn't need to sit in traffic.
I'm single so it worked out for me, but it depends on if you have a family, different types of financial committments, how far you want to commute, etc.

Alot of this depends; are you single/family? are you looking for good schools/nightlife? apartment/house? where are you looking to work? and also-
may I ask why you are leaving Houston? I am considering looking there!
I have a lot of bad memories here. I am just looking for a change...that's all

Too funny!...because that is exactly why I am looking to get away too .
Wherever you go, good luck to you.
Being single gives you so many more options (Atlanta is a very expensive city for raising children). I will ask around and see what I can find out about any specific spots but generally, the farther north you go, the lower the property/violent crime rate. ATL has lots of pockets of good areas too. If you are in to more alternative scene then Virginia Highlands are is good. If you are party gal/love to shop then Buckhead is good. If you are a "freak" looking to get that final piercing in your "unmentionables" area then anything on or around Ponce de Leon is good . And if your tattoos need freshening....anything off Buford highway is great too. .
One thing I would recommend (after you talk to folks at the hospitals) is to call the police or Sherrif (sp?) and tell them "I am a single female looking to relocate to _____ in _______ area and I was wondering if you guys have to take a lot of calls from around there." -something like that ....that lets them stay P.C. while also letting you know good places.
Atlanta has a big influx of folks sick of the torturous commute and some areas that used to be on par with Beruit are now considered up and coming.
Alas, I have been exiled to a small town...to raise my kids in peace.... .
Take care and I will ask around.
Thanks IntrospectiveRN. I will call the Sheriff, because I wouldn't want to have to beat Atlantans(sp?) with my bat...lol.
Keep the bat on the ball field.... carry a large caliber handgun!
Seriously though, Dunwoody is not too bad - mostly businesses and upscale homes/apartments.
Further recommendation... stay OUTSIDE the city limits of ATL.
well, i moved here from NYC and didnt want to live in the city per se so, my family and I live in Cobb county in smyrna. which happens to have very good schools and very close to 285 so i get downtown in 15 min
(without traffic). its like being in the city and subs at the same time. where ever you decided to live go check it out at nite. see if you like the atmosphere after dark. single or not you dont want to live in a neighborhood that never sleeps. good luck
