Graduate Nurse in career dilemma need help!!!

Published

Hey guys,

I want to thank you before hand for taking the time to hear me out, and giving me your valuable opinions. I am a recent graduate nurse with my ASN in nursing. I have about a year left to finish my BSN and from there would like to pursue my ARNP degree. As of now I have been offered a job at a Med/Tele position, but I m not sure that I want to take it. My goal is to work in critical care either ED, ICU, or PCU so that I can get my years experience for the ARNP program. I have been told that if I start in a MED/TELE position that I may be looked down upon and would have to truly prove myself to get into a more critical unit. I am grateful to be offered a job so quickly as a new nurse, but I am afraid to close of my options so soon and not do other interviews. I have spoken to the HR manager and told her I still wanted to pursue my options and she said that she understood. However, I am not sure that they are going to wait too long for my answer. The unit truly wants me and they even told me to give them the opportunity to convince me to stay. I have no idea what to do and hope I can get some input from other nurses.

I'm not an RN yet (in my last year of a BSN program), but I thought I'd chime in anyway. Most of the critical care nurses I know started on a med-surg unit and did not regret the experience they acquired there. As far as I know, it's not looked down upon. Plus telemetry skills will be important in critical care.

That sounds like a tough decision though. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out!

It is a though decision, because it is a good opportunity. However, I am still conflicted in whether I should pursue what I want from the beginning or just take this job. Thanks for your input, I will keep you all posted.
