Hi everyone,
I've been an RN working in LTC for 9 months, and just accepted a Surgical/Oncology position at a hospital.
Does anyone recommend a good book or two for a new RN to pick up? Does such book exist? Or even some online reading material. Sort of a, things you should know/do/focus on as a new RN. Material to help you brush up, because I know a lot of what I learned in school has already been filed away in the back alleys of my brain.
I really have no acute care experience as a working nurse, and I don't expect to walk into this new job knowing it all. I'd just like to pick up some reading material to get the gears greased up and going again. I know I've lost some of that sharpness since graduation, and not to make a knock against LTC but in some ways I've felt like a pill pusher more than anything else.
I thought about subscribing to AJN as well or some related journal, does anyone recommend this?
Thanks all! :)

I know there are a number of books aimed at new nurses, or nurses in their first year after licensure. They broach such topics as time management, how to handle stress, how to interact with co-workers, etc. "Your First Year as a Nurse" is one that I know of.

I just finished a book called "Critical Care" by Theresa Brown. It is not so much a content book but its an excellent read. Its about an oncology nurse in her first year after school and how she handles the patients, her coworkers and her home life. I would definitely recommend it. Congrats on the job offer too!
