getting sued?

I had my nursing professor talk about how OB MDs can now a day get sued forever if they messup during the devilory, and it just made me wonder about how often CRNAs get sued. Whether you are rual or urban either way i am just looking for what is it like in the real world for CRNAs.

Thanks

This is a statute of limitations issue and your instructor is not accurate. In some jurisdictions (changes from state to state), the Statue of Limitations starts when a person reaches 18. So they have 1-3 years after they are 18 to sue for birth injuries that may have been caused by professional negligence.

Where your instructor is wrong is the, "forever" statement.

Anesthesia is an area where one can be sued if a bad outcome is related to negligence. OB anesthesia comes with inherent risks of administering anesthesia that affects both the mother and child.

CRNAs do get named in lawsuits, that is why we carry malpractice insurance. It helps to keep accurate anesthesia records, know what to do and doing it well (not necessarily in that order).
