Hello everyone,
I was just wondering how hard it is to get into nursing school. I know that the competition makes it very very hard, and that is why I am soo scared. I live in the bay area so the schools that I want to go to are the following: Francisco State, Cal State East Bay, and maybe San Jose state. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to get into the nursing programs for these schools? If you recently got in, what was your GPA like?
I also have some other questions: Is it possible to finish nursing school in 4 years? Why does it have to take 5?
And I am going to start school tomorrow and I am hoping I get into my Anatomy class. Can anyone tell me how it is? Is it hard? I took it in high school, but now I'm going to De Anza college. I just really hope that I can get an A in this class.
Thank you

Hey, I am not sure how hard it is to get into those schools but most schools tell how many new nursing students they take each year an also how many usually apply. That should give you an i dea of how competitive the programs are to get into.
Also, Human Anatomy is pretty hard, I found that taking organic chemistry and microbiology really helped with taking human anatomy. Some schools have pre reqs before you can get into human anatomy, so you should check that out too.
You can do nursing school in four years, but you usually have to take an average of 15-18 credits a semester. Nursing requires alot of pre reqs, so sometimes it is easier to stretch it out over five years instead of four. Well I hope I helped you out.

Yes generally nursing schools are hard to get in no matter where you go. If you want to know specifically, email the nursing dept of those schools and ask. I had a cumulative 3.9 GPA when I entered the program.
Yes its possible to finish nursing in 4 years, you just need to take more credits. I could have done that but I messed up with my class arrangements my first year. Ugh I was barely 17, fresh out of high school and had no clue. So now its extended to 4.5 years.
Anatomy and physiology was a challenge, but nothing too bad. Its a lot of memorization and studying. I took anatomy in high school too ... and its nothing compared to college anatomy

I was told at CSU East Bay the average last year was 3.7GPA.
I took high school anatomy also, but i think that its going to be nothing compared college anatomy!
One thing that really sucks for me is that i cannot take the classes that i need, i only got into 1 science class so far and this is my second quarter in college! The science classes fill up very fast and its very disheartening. So,this means that i will have to transfer in 3 years instead of 2...by this i mean i will be done with my classes by the second year, its just that in order to apply to these schools i need to have all of my pre requistes done by fall 2010...and there is no way that i will be getting into those science classes and be done with them by the summer..so then i can't apply in fall 2010, i have to wait until fall 2011...and thats because now the CSU's have even stopped the mid year transfers!!! This really is not what i planned for! Now, instead of 5 its going to take me 6 years to become a nurse...unless once i get into nursing school i take more than average units. Do any of u think this is possible? Do you still think that i may be able to finish in 5 years?
What is the average number of units students take in nursing school, and what will i have to take in order to finish on time?
Sorry, i know that many of you may be annoyed with my ranting and venting about this...but im just really worried that i wont get into nursing school, and that it may take a lot of time to become a nurse.
Thank you for reading, and i hope you keep on posting some wonderful answers and support! :)
Hey I just wanted to let you know that most nursing schools have their students schedules and courses already set and you usually can't take more courses than the alreay set courses. For example the nursing school that I applied to has already sent me the schedule of courses that I will take for the next two years.
If you can't get into those science courses it may take you a little longer to gt into nursing school. At my school, if you aren't able to get into some classes that you need, you can go on the first day of class and ask the professor if he/she will allow you to get into the class. Maybe you could see if you could do that.
Well hope this helps,
