IM amounts

I could have posted this in the General Nursing area but since I work in a mostly LTC facility I'll post it here.

The P and P where I work is no more than 2 ml for an IM injection,no matter what muscle site it is injected into.

In school I remember injecting 3 ml IM. I have a text that says 5 ml in certain large muscle groups.

The 2ml P and P is a bummer when you have to give someone 2 shots for any thing over the 2ml.

So what do you think? Is the 2 ml parameter not a good PandP?

geriatric muscle atrophy and a prior incident is probably the reason for this policy. If you have the access, I would speak to the pharmacist about ordering more concentrated doses to prevent the necessity of two IM shots.
