HESI A2 Broward College

Hey guys, I just recently took the HESI A2 exam and I got an 88%. Seems like a pretty great score, but not good enough. I'll let you guys know what I remember from the exam to help future applicants.

Broward college for nursing only requires Grammar, Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and, of course, Anatomy and Physiology.

Grammar, Reading, and Vocabulary were possibly the most easiest to know. I took just about 4-5 days to study for all three topics. Reading was extremely easy, asking basically what is the meaning of word X in paragraph Y. What is the main idea of the paragraph, etc. Basic! Grammar is a little bit more difficult, you'd want to get the Elsevier study guide booklet to definitely go over the grammar topics. Read EVERYTHING...especially the topics about "neither, nor" and "either, or" and try to identify adverbs, pronouns, dependent and independent phrases, etc. HALF the vocabulary learned in the Elsevier booklet was on the exam, I actually expected more. But the words were not hard, context clues really helped to figure out the meaning of some of the words. It can get tricky, just take your time with it.

As for math, it was cake to me. Mainly because there is an electronic calculator. Most if not all the math questions were fractions. Adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, RATIOS. Ratios made up a large portion of the exam so be sure to study up on those. There were a few word problems, probably about 3-5 questions out of the 55 so just brush up on some basic word problem algebra.

Anatomy was a kicker. It was tough... and the Elsevier study guide helped slightly in this portion. Its best to do a lot of your own research to study for this part of the exam. I got a 72% in this part of the exam, 3 points away from actually being able to apply so... next time I'm going to get at it fiercely! Many questions that I got stumped on was about the bones, types of cartilage and joints and what kind of joint are able to rotate and what are limited to extending. Also muscles were a large chunk that should be studied up, especially what type of muscles extends, adbucts, adducts, where they are located. Learn what each muscle does for the body's movement!! Definitely know EVERYTHING about the endocrine system, what kind of hormone each gland produces and what they do for the body. Learn the parts of the spinal cord, how many bones are in each part like the lumbar, thoracic, etc. Review PNS and CNS, the motor nerves and sensory nerves. Get to know everything you possibly can about anatomy. It's best to be overprepared than under. Anatomy was only 30 questions so it's easy to mess up!!

Some things I used to study was the Elsevier study guide and this cool HESI study app, by pocket prep. I paid the extra 10 bucks for the full version and it was worth it. Not only does some of the questions appear on the exam, but on the app it explains to you the answers. Worth investing in to!! Along with that, I went through some other articles in these archives and found some useful links!

Anatomy & Physiology

That helped the MOST... lectures are there and even some cool useful flashcards.

GOOD LUCK ALL.
