Ideas for nursing quotes

  1. Hi all
This is only my second time posting, but read often. My friend and I are putting on a nursing retreat here in our small Alaska town. We're having a dinner and like to set each place with an inspiring/funny quote. In the past I've looked for nursing quotes online and not had much luck. Does anyone have a favorite site for such things, or any ideas?
Also, we have a movie room going, any ideas on great comedies (read not too heavy) to show?
    I appreciate any input.

    What a great idea! I'd attend if I weren't 1000 miles away!

My favorite phrase to use (at home with my kids) is: I am NOT a multi-tasker! Seems very appropriate in today's nursing climate.

    My favorite nursing inspirational quote:

She who works with her hands is a laborer.

She who works with her hands and mind is a craftsman.

She who works with her hands, mind, and heart is an artist.

She who works with her hands, mind, heart, and feet is a NURSE.

    I love this one.

Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon.

I got this from nurse I work with. Apparently she had a daily calender with sayings on it......
"It's hard to live with a nurse because....Unless you are bleeding profusely, with bones protruding from the skin, and you can't breathe, you won't get any medical attention or sympathy.
Now that I am a nurse, I can so understand!! I work with sick people 8 hours a night and have a hard time coming up with any compasion for my husband's hangnail, my daughter's cramps or any other non-emergency complaint they might have!!

The martyr sacrifices themselves entirely in vain. Or rather not in vain; for they make the selfish more selfish, the lazy more lazy, the narrow narrower.
    Florence Nightingale

"Unless we are making progress in our nursing every year, every month, every week, take my word for it we are going back."

    ~Florence Nightingale, 1914

"Let whoever is in charge keep this simple question in her head - (not, how can I always do this right thing myself, but) how can I provide for the right thing to be always done?"

    ~Florence Nightingale

"Nursing encompasses an art, a humanistic orientation, a feeling for the value of the individual, and an intuitive sense of ethics, and of the appropriateness of action taken."

    ~Myrtle Aydelotte, 1992

"...the character of the nurse is as important as the knowledge she possesses."

    ~Jarvis, 1996

Live your life while you have it. Life is a splendid gift. There is nothing small about it.

    -Florence nightingale

"The nurse has become one of the great blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the priest,
and not inferior to either in her mission"
    Sir William Osler, MD (1849-1919)

Here is a link to a CD of music called "Thank the Nurse"

Here are the lyrics to the song "Thank the Nurse"

    "Thank the Nurse"
    1. Doctors and Physicians diagnose and prescribe.
Surgeons can operate but they don't save your life.
For when the fever's burning, who helps you through the night
Gives you medication and checks your vital signs?
When you wake up in recovery who's right there by your side? With a smile and reassurance, restoring your self-pride.
Thank the Nurse that's nursing you.
The one that nursed you through.
Thank the Nurse that's nursing you,
For saving your life....for saving your life..

    2. Oh, the Doctor is important of that we can't deny.
But when you get down to it, the Nurse keeps you alive.
The one who cleans your body and bandages your wounds.
The one who makes your bed, gives you medicine and food.
Helps you through contractions, until the pain subsides.
Encourage you to make it 'till you hear your baby cry!

Thank the Nurse that's nursing you.
The one that nursed you through.
Thank the Nurse that's nursing you
For saving your life....for saving your life...

    3. When you're sick and convalescing you're seldom in the mood
To pay attention to the one attending you.
So full of rack and worry you think you'll lose your mind.
You survived the accident but all your friends have died.
When the orderly is sleeping and physician can't be found
No need for apprehension a nurse is making rounds!

Thank the Nurse that's nursing you.
The one that nursed you through.
Thank the Nurse that's nursing you
For saving your life....for saving your life...

Nurses are angels in comfortable shoes.

From the book, "Cherry Ames, Student Nurse" ...

"A real nurse will never stand when she can sit ... and will never sit when she can lie down."

Really, it's in there. I'm not kidding.

I love your idea of a nurse retreat!
Is it for your hospital or workplace, or for your entire community? Are you including students?
    Are you charging admission?
    Sounds like a ball!

Meet the Parents in which Jerry Stiller plays a male nurse.

I Remember Mama, a very old movie has a section in it where one the the children has to have an operation. It portrays what the hospital system was like at the turn of the century (had to pay up front, very strict rules about visitation, nurses wearing starched white uniforms and caps) which I always found interesting.

Thanks for all the responses. They are very helpful and appreciated. The retreat is something we hold every year. It is a free event for all nurses in our community. We raise the money by donation. Our community is very easy to define as we live on an island. Is still a great event I would recommend to anyone, though. We usually have yoga, massages, dinner, any event that will help nurses remember to take care of themselves.
    Again, thanks for the input.
