How much time would you suggest?

I am considering entering the nursing field and I am wondering what is the MINIMUM time that you would suggest for one to work in the field before one moves on to an advanced nursing degree such as CRNA, CNS, or NA?

I'd say at least two years. The first year is really about learning, and the second year is when you really get the hang of things. Everyone is different, but I don't think anyone is really ready before that two year mark. And if you're thinking about going to CRNA school, you'll need at least a year of ICU experience, and there is so much to learn!

For the most part, I agree with Gompers. However, there are a few graduate level courses that you could take earlier because getting the benefit from them does not depend upon having clinical competance. The material in a course such as phyisiology, statistics, maybe an introductory research course, etc. can be fully grasped by people without clinical experience.

Other courese however, are built upon knowledge and skills gained through experienced in the field. Even a course such as nursing theory ... or issues in advanced practice ... etc. is better grasped by the student if that student has some real-world experience to provide a foundation and a context for more fully understanding them.
