Full time vs per diem pay difference

I'm curious what other NP's have experienced with pay difference between being a full-time employee (with benefits, etc) vs per diem. I've been reading difference is anywhere between 20-30% to account for benefits. I currently have a full-time position but would like to pick up some per diem work with a surgeon I know who just went private practice. Trying to figure out what $ to ask. Thanks for any thoughts/info/advice!

I work as a per diem (On Call NP) at another hospital and my hourly pay there is approximately 20% more than what I would have gotten paid if I were working there full time. Their rates are based on a Union Contract. I've once been offered a per diem position at a private practice group and the pay was even lower than in my full time position.

It should be at least 20-30% more than your full time base rate. You could even negotiate higher than that depending on how desperate they are. I have negotiated PRN 1099 contract rates as high as $100 an hour. If you go this route, ensure you are being paid 1099 to a LLC. This is the most tax advantageous route to take. The goal with a 1099 position is to legally avoid as many taxes as possible and the best way to do this is having it paid to your LLC for business expenses.

Thank you both for your info. Much appreciated it!
