From Med/Surg to ER(plan relocate alb, NM Help)

Published

Hello!!!!!!!!!!! I've work 3yrs in med/surg come 2006, graduated in 5/2003. Instructors all suggest to go for Med/Surg to get a feel of working with basically any and every body, and so I done that, great experience and challenging area to work in, but it is time for me to move on. Im here in my home town Tulsa, okla and rushing to get out quik, fast, and in a hurry. My plans is to move to Albuquerque, NM in the summer of 2006, just because my best friend moved there and stated it was nice. Anyway, my question is what hospitals out there that over some sort of fellowship program-like an intense training program for the ER, because that is what I want to do next. I feel very comfidence in myself that I will do fine, I have only BLS cert, but that should not stop me from entering the ER area of nurse. If I could get feed back on what hosp offer something like that , I would much appreciate it. thanks, Mary

I don't know about the US, but in the UK you are perfectly qualified for a progression into the ED.

Here, nurses who have come from other areas have a two week orientation, you won't be allocated to Triage or Resus for at least six months if not more and will have support in every other area from more senior nurses. In the UK, you don't need any more than BLS to start, since skills are learned and then courses such as advanced life support etc are offered.

We have many nurses who change specialities and within months, they are generally the best nurses we have!

I personally always wanted to be an emergency nurse, but on my ED placement, I discussed this with senior nurses, all who suggested a rotation to other areas before coming to the speciality, having seen people who come straight from nursing school struggling to adjust to the demands of the ED, I am glad for the route I chose.

I wish you every success, I'm sure you'll do brilliantly :)
