FNP v. ANP/GNP...applying to both programs, nursing wisdom sought!

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm currently enrolled in a second degree BSN/MSN program at UPenn. I've decided to switch my master's concentration from women's health to either family health or adult/gero health np. The more I talked to local NPs, I've found women's health opportunities to be very limiting. I've applied to both family and adult/gero (have been accepted to family thus far). I enjoy working with everyone from teens to older adults, but I've also heard that being an adult NP can limit job opportunities, too. While I don't love working with kids, I don't absolutely hate it. I'm interested in everything from infectious disease (especially HIV/HCV) and reproductive health to obesity and diabetes. Penn's program is ridiculously expensive, so I just want to make sure I get the most opportunities for the money and I have a good chance of a well-paying job when I'm done.

I've read some of the other threads, and you all seem so wise! I'd be happy for any career advice from students, NPs, RNs, whomever! If it's helpful, I'm hoping to eventually practice either in Pittsburgh or New England, and I would love to run my own clinic someday.

Thank you for reading!
