FNP liability insurance separate from employer

Thank you in advance for any responses,

I’m a relatively new nurse practitioner and will be starting at a large private corporation that does pain management, with heavy emphasis on injection procedures.

They offer a pretty common as a benefit of employment. I’ve seen or heard comments that NP’s should carry their own insurance separate from the employers because the insurance will “defend who’s paying for the insurance” - or may not have “my” best interest in mind when fighting a claim.

I’ve also heard carrying your own separate insurance could make you a target for lawsuits.

I’ve been unable to find reliable information on either of these claims and am wondering if anyone has advice on if I should purchase my own separate insurance in addition to the employer provided one. Also if anyone is knowledgeable on this if you could briefly explain the pros and cons of having my own versus just employer coverage that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks again,
