Hi everyone,
I am an R.N. in the FNP program. The program I'm in allows me to do it anywhere and I'm thinking of moving to Austin. My question are:
How is the job market for R.Ns
How many FNP programs does Austin have?
How is the job market for FNPs?
Can they write prescriptions for controlled substances and what is the collaborative agreement like?
What is the average salary for both R.Ns and FNPs?
How is your overall economy and housing market?
How strict is your BON? I was reading some of the disciplinary actions and it looked a if they revoked somebody for being diagnosed as bipolar? I thought that was illegal? I'm not bipolar, but I have heard Texas is strict and any mistake the BON revokes, but of course this could be rumor from people unwilling to look at their part.
If there are any FNPs on here who would be willing to talk to me mentor me through this decision I would be forever grateful.
Thanks!
Sarah

I am FNP here in Austin, I can give you my opinions on some of your questions.
Job market for RNs is pretty good if you have experience. New grads are having a hard time.
Job market for NPs is not as good in my opinion. I looked for several months after graduating before reluctantly taking a retail clinic job. I am now commuting to a FP clinic about 30 miles outside of Austin. Pay is lower than what you will find in other major TX cities like DFW or Houston. I would say avg is $40ish per hr. but you will find jobs that pay a lot less and some that pay a lot more.
Austin only has one traditional FNP program, at The University of Texas. There are also a lot of people here who do the online program through Texas Tech.
You can write for controlled substances schedule 3 and below as long as you have a DEA #. You do have to have a collaborating physician.
Overall the economy and housing market are good in Austin, probably better than most places. The problem is Austin is a desirable city to live in, so jobs are harder to come by and people are willing to take less pay in order to live here. It is also a higher cost of living than most other TX cities.
I really can't answer your question on the BON. I have never had an issue with them.
Austin is a wonderful place to live and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon, I only wish the jobs were more plentiful here. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I haven't lived in Austin, but i agree with txcardiorn. I did interview in Austin and turned down the job because they totally low balled me and were not willing to negotiate at all! $40/hr and NO benefits for 2 years experience... I started higher as a new grad with benefits!
I think Austin is similar to other sought after cities in CA, Miami, Colorado, etc... People want to live there so jobs are harder to come by.
If you have the option I would make sure you get a job first before moving there.
