First day back

I've had odd complaints all day.

I know with a nosebleed we aren't supposed to have the kiddo express the clot...but this kid was in my office for ten minutes holding his nose as best he could while I helped all my regulars , so I brought him to my sink and the biggest clot I have EVER seen come out of a nose plopped into my sink. The bleeding stopped but I'm still kinda in shock. lol

One word: LICE!!

States he was pushed down and hit his head multiple times. No mark, no witness, no clue who pushed him. Headache 8-9 out of 10, stomach ache 6/10. He is chatty, talks with friends in clinic, moves with ease. After I tell him 9/10 is awful, usually those kids cry and need the lights off. 5 mins later he is trying to make himself cry and stating the lights are bothering him. Asks me to call his mom and let him talk to her.

Ug. Whenever I have a kid that I suspect is trying to list of symptoms that they remember being associated with something (concussion, strep throat) I offer a list of symptoms and see if they bite on any that are not associated with whatever they are complaining of. For example: For sore throat, I'll ask when their throat hurts- all the time, when they breathe in/out, when they cough, or when they swallow? From my experience strep hurts when they swallow but (if they are exaggerating symptoms) they will pick all the time since it sounds the most severe.

One word: LICE!!

Get a specimen!!! For science!!

1) OTC medication drop-off x3

2) Abx drop-off with no detailed information- just a note giving permission for LD to take

3) Splinters from the playground (Why the heck did they think a cool playground made completely of wood was a good idea?!?!)

4) Sore throats that started .25 seconds ago

The stomach bug hit our house over the weekend. I still feel like poo. Also dealing with nasty congestion which must bring out the snark.

Kids come in saying they don't feel good:

2 stomach ache complaints. One has already gone home but I suspect she'll be back tomorrow considering she did THE EXACT SAME THING the week before Thanksgiving break and returned the next day. No temp. Color was fine. But call was made before I arrived today, so whatevs.

The other LD with a stomach ache now feels just fine but I SUSPECT pink eye (cause, ya know....I can't diagnose) so naturally I can't get a hold of anyone to come pick her up. Again, whatevs. She's a cool kid so I'll just hang with her in my office

I heard the wheezing before the student even got to my doorway. No inhaler, wheezes all lobes, AR 146, rescue called. They gave 2 breathing tx while here waiting for mom. She didn't want them to transport--too expensive.

She signed saying she knew the risks and drove child to ER herself.

Bums me out when $$ overrules good medical care, especailly when it can go so bad, so fast. Hopefully the Tx she got carried her safely to ER.

So sad that this is a concern for so many people. So sad that this is a choice that has to be made. I've heard of some ambulance rides costing up to $1000 depending on one's insurance- not to mention the cost of what will be done in the ER. I am fortunate enough to have great insurance through my school. Without it, when my daughter broke her arm I would've been out at least $8000.
